Building History

Richard Meier and Partners, Architects designed this $198 million governmental complex that consisted of an extensive piazza leading off Santa Clara Street, a transparent rotunda covering a grand lobby, an 18-story office tower, and a 3-story council wing, containing the City Council Chambers, public meeting rooms, commercial storefronts, and departmental offices. This city government ensemble was set within a larger civic center complex that included within its seven blocks a new performance hall, elementary school, and library. Meier's Design Partner, Michael Palladino designed the San Jose City Hall with another Partner, James R. Clarke, and, of course, Meier.
