The English-born landscape architect, Edward Huntsman-Trout, created the Honnold Gate in 1938. A stylized swan's neck broken pediment topped the gate which also had wrought iron details, including a fanlight.
To one side of the entry gate was inscribed a quote from the founder of Scripps College, Ellen Browning Scripps (1836-1932): "The paramount obligation of a college is to develop in its students the ability to think clearly and independently and the ability to live confidently courageously and hopefully."
