Architectural historian Harold Kirker noted of the Whittell House: "The house Ernest Coxhead constructed in 1893 for George Whittell was done in the manner of the Cancelleria Palance [sic], and even the much-grumbling critic Ernest Peixotto admitted it would be 'one of the chief architetural attractions among San Francisco residences."
