Cal (d. 03/2003) and Harriet (d. 1997) Shorts commissioned the Regional Modernist, Paul Hayden Kirk, to design their house in Bellevue, WA. They donated the house and land to the City of Bellevue for use as a park, which was opened in 1992. The residence became the Botanical Gardens' new Visitor Center. The house featured the long, shallowly-pitched, gabled roof lines, projecting rafters, and multiple terraces seen in other dwellings by Kirk. On the inside, Kirk used sliding translucent doors, derived from Japanese shoji, to allow interior spaces to be flexibly closed for privacy or opened for maximum space.
