Personal

Relocation

Martin J. Rist, Sr., was born in Columbus, OH, on 08/17/1888, to German-born parents, George and Frederike Rist. According to the Library of Congress.gov, "An estimated 2.8 million German-born immigrants lived in the United States [by 1890]. A majority of the German-born living in the United States were located in the "German triangle," whose three points were Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and St. Louis." (See Library of Congress.gov., "The Germans in America Chronology," accessed 02/02/2024.) They resided in OH until about 1890, when they moved across country to San Francisco, CA.

In 1910, Rist lived with his parents and seven siblings in an apartment at 315 Mateo Street in San Francisco. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Francisco Assembly District 33, San Francisco, California; Roll: T624_97; Page: 15b; Enumeration District: 0073; FHL microfilm: 1374110, accessed 02/02/2024.)

He resided with his new wife at 1130 Cole Street in San Francisco, as per county voting records. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1913.)

In 06/1917, Rist resided with his family at 57 Grattan Street in San Francisco, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Registration State: California; Registration County: San Francisco Source Information Ancestry.com. U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005, accessed 02/02/2024.) He continued to live at 57 Grattan in 1918. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1918, p. 1434.) They moved to 955 Clayton Street by 1920, in what. in 2024, was the Cole Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1920.)

The Rists had moved to the well-to-do Saint Francis Wood neighbrohood of San Francisco by 1930. Their address was listed in the 1930 US Census as 133 Yerba Buena Avenue. The house had an estimated worth of $17,000, comparable to neighboring structures. They were prosperous enough to afford a servant, Mary Healy (born c. 1905 in Northern Ireland.) (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: San Francisco, San Francisco, California; Page: 22A; Enumeration District: 0093; FHL microfilm: 2339933, accessed 02/02/2024.)

He and his family dwelled at 136 Yerba Buena Avenue in 1940, likely the same house as that reported in the 1930 census. The Rists employed a maid at the time, Rose Jeong (born c. 1916 in CA). Their dwelling had an estimated value of $10,000, less than in 1930, but still in line with those of others nearby. This house was located nearby to that of architect Lawrence A. Kruse (1894-1971), who, in 1940, lived at 233 Santa Paula Avenue with his wife, son, and a household servant.
