Architects Irving J. Gill (1870-1936) and William S. Hebbard (1863-1930) designed this small residence for the lawyer Johnson Wagoner Puterbaugh (b. 09/26/1875 in Peoria, IL) and his new bride, Florence Gertrude Fairbanks Puterbaugh, (a native of MA), who were married 12/11/1901. They had one son, George Puterbaugh II, (born 09/25/1902), named for Johnson's father. Puterbaugh came from a family of lawyers and jurists. Another house of similar floor plan was located at Third Avenue and Ivy Street. (See Kathleen Flanigan, "William Sterling Hebbard Consummate San Diego Architect," Journal of San Diego History, vol. 33, no. 1, Winter 1987, footnote #41. On Johnson W. Puterbaugh, see Clarence Alan McGrew, City of San Diego and San Diego County: The Birthplace of California, [Chicago and New York: American Historical Society, 1922], Volume 2, p. 10.)
