The Seattle City Council considered in 07/2009 whether to allow the construction of cottages up to 800 square feet in the backyards of existing houses throughout the city. These detached small dwellings were approved on a test basis in Southeast Seattle in 2006; during the 2006-2009 span, only 17 of the cottages had been built, but minimal public opposition was aroused. The City Council approved attached "mother-in-law apartments" for backyards in 1994.
