"perhaps the most ambitious effort in planning in advance of development of a university in the United States was in connection with the University of California. In 1896 Mrs Phoebe Hearst, the benefactress of the University, gave a sum of $30,000 in prizes for a plan, which was open to international competition. The jury finally awarded the prize to a French architect, Emile Benard. The dominant style of the Univeristy buildings, which include the Sather Campanile in granite, is Italian Renaissance." (p. 202)
