Notes:
"One of these operations is Ralph's Grocery Co. of Los Angeles, who have been pioneering in the food business since 1873. Starting, as all pioneers do, in a most modest way, Ralph's developed some of the finest markets in Los Angeles. As far back as 1930 they were operating markets--really SUper Markets--which would have been a credit to any community. Some of these early Ralph buildings are almost as modern today as when they were built 25 and 30 years ago. When Ralph's emerged 25 years ago as Super Market operators, they again built the finest buildings, which at that time required an investment of $100,000 per unit. By 1929, Ralph's had 12 cash-and-carry stores, and by 1936, they had increased to 25 units of the SUper Market type." (p. 25). The presentation drawing on p. 166 may have been drawn by the firm of H.W. Underhill, an architect of Los Angeles, who specialized in the design of large-scale markets.
