Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced that in his new budget he would spend $8.3 million for neighborhood parks, $3.7 million for sidewalks and transportation projects, $9.6 million for youth programs, skate parks, trees, community groups, and neighborhood development projects, and $786,000 for arts programs and cultural facilities. He also mentioned his intention to create a seven-mile heritage trail in Seattle, patterned on Boston's Freedom Trail.
