Banham reviewed Alan Hess's book Googie (1985) and Philip Langdon's Orange Roofs, Golden Arches: The Architecture of American Chain Restaurants (1986). He focused his short review on the Ship's Coffee Shop in Westwood, torn down on 09/20/1984. Banham wrote: "...The California coffee-shop idea or idiom (of which Ship's was the most consummate and comprehensive example) had a continent-wide influence on individual outlets, even in places as wildly usuitable as Buffalo, New York, and--in a more dilute way--on many of the major chains."
