"Trained in the office of McKim, Mead & White, [A. Page] Brown started his own architectural practice in 1884 under the patronage of Mrs. Cyrus McCormick. Most of his early designs were for insitutional buildings commissioned by the Chicago heiress as part of her extensive philanthropic activities. The majority of Brown's projects when [Willis J.] Polk entered the office came directly or indirectly form Mrs. McCormixk's East Coast friends."
