Mr. Mathews, born in Wisconsin, had practiced in Oakland since 1886. He was the architect for all the buildings on the north side of 14th Street between Franklin Street and Broadway, Oakland, and for the immigration building on Angel Island, as well as many private homes on both sides of the bay."
