"When William Gray Purcell died in 1965, just two years after he was made a fellow of the Institute for design, it was apparent the profession in general did not really grasp his significant influence on the contemporary scene. Perhaps the person most knowledgeable on Purcell's work is David Gebhard, an acquaintance and art gallery director, who says, 'In recent years Purcell's importance as a writer and critic on American architecture has come to be fully appreciated. The next step will be that of realizing his contribution as a designer: his ability to fuse together many of the major tenets of 20th century architecture.'"
