Typical of the firms contextual approach at this time, the 550 South Hope Street building "...was designed to relate to its immediate neighbor, Bertram Goodhue's Los Angeles Public Library of 1926, and to George W. Kelham's California Club building of 1929 across the street." (p. 208) A. Eugene Kohn stated: "Key to the design of this building is its relationship to the California Club and the Los Angeles Public Library achieved by its massing and color. This uniquely Californian skyscraper speaks of its important location in the downtown area while accomplishing a hnadsome, efficient, and economical office building." (p. 211)
