A native of San Francisco and a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Knowles opened his practice with Hertzka in 1933. During World War II, the two men helped design and build an Arizona copper mine with the U.S. Army. In a partnership that spanned decades, the two men designed St. Mary's Hospital, two BART stations, the Golden Gate Bridge administration building and several local banks and schools. Mr. Knowles retired in 1974 and devoted himself to painting, specializing in watercolor landscapes."
