Reconstructed fort containing several restored buildings including commandant's quarters...and 1828 church, largely rebuilt following 1906 earthquake. Established by Russians to open trade with Spanish California and to create a an agricultural depot here, became largest Russian fur trading center south of Alaska; contributed to formation of Monroe Doctrine (1823) which included denunciation of future European colonization efforts on the American continents.
