"Six-month building activity in Seattle is the 17th largest in the United States, ranking ahead of larger cities such as Detroit, Kansas City and New Orelans. A survey of building permits by Dun & Bradstreet in the country's 200 largest cities showed Seattle with $79.8 million in permits for the first six months. The figure represented a 17 per cent drop from last year's figure for Seattle and was the third largest decline among the top 25 cities on the list. On a mixed list, 14 cities reported gains over 1969 and 11 reported declines. largest losers were Detroit, down 31.1 per cent, Atlanta, down 23.7 per cent, and Seattle." This drop in building activity actually presaged a further drop in the city's economy fortunes following the "Boeing Bust," when the federal government halted further development of Boeing's supersonic transport (SST) project on 12/03/1970.
