The Seattle Public Library System, which consisted of a central library and 26 branches, sustained a $1.77 million cut in its budget for the year 2010, due to the larger recession that slowed the U.S. and local economies. According to this article, the Seattle Public Library was one of the busiest of its size in the country: "Nearly one in 11 Seattle residents uses the library, which is at least double the rate of many other library systems in the country." Cuts would result in service 60 hours, 7 days a week at 11 branches and the Central Library, while 15 other branches would remain open 35 hours, 5 days per week.
