He passed away from a "brain fever" at the age of 27.

His elder brother was Harold Louis Cunningham (born c. 1868 in British India), with whom he practiced architecture for a short time before Gerald's premature death.

He wed Mary Elizabeth "Mazie" Otey (born 08/28/1878 in San Francisco, CA-d. 04/20/1956 in Coronado, CA) on on 04/16/1900 in Alameda County, CA. Gerald Cunningham died about two months after his wedding.

Mazie married again to Ernest Mendenhall in 1902.

As noted in 1896 Alameda County voter registration records, Gerald Cunningham was 23, Caucasian with a light complexion, gray eyes and and brown hair. He stood 5-feet, 11-inches tall.
