He moved from Italy to New York in 1910, where he set up a studio. He migrated to Los Angeles, CA, in 1923, probably with the promise of major sculptural commissions, such as the Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church (1923-1925). He resided in Los Angeles until his death in 1948.
He had two children that went into show business: Guy Scarpitta (1915–1978) and actress Carmen Scarpitta (1933–2008)
