Relocation
Henry Layton Osterman was born in Seattle, WA, to Hugo W. Osterman and Mildred Layton. About eleven months after his birth, the 1940 US Census recorded that his parents and sister resided in "Manhattan," King County. In 2024, the contemporary Manhattan Village neighborhood straddled the city boundaries of Burien (to the east 1st Avenue South [State Route 509] and Normandy Park to the west. No street address was given on the census form, but it was likely close to or in the same location as the house where the Ostermans lived a decade later.
Osterman lived with his family in a house located at 1650 SW 173rd Place, Burien, WA. His grandmother, Lavina Ginevra Cooney Osterman resided next door at 1644 SW 173rd Place, as noted in the 1950 US Census. Both houses were located in a comfortable neighborhood of dwellings located nearby to Elliott Bay. Many had prime water views. The houses on SW 173rd Place have been renumbered since 1950. In his later years, Osterman resided on Bainbridge Island, WA.
