Personal

Relocation

In 1940, Joseph lived with his parents Domingo, and Elizabeth and elder brother Domingo, at 157 North Fuller Avenue in the Fairfax neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. The house had an estimated value of $8,500 in 1940, on par with neighboring, midlle-class dwellings. The census also indicated that the Amestoys had lived in the same location in 1935. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1940; Census Place: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; Roll: m-t0627-00405; Page: 7B; Enumeration District: 60-202, accessed 10/09/2024.)

The architect was buried at the Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.

Parents

His father was Domingo Frank Amestoy (born 04/18/1901 in Los Angeles, CA-d. 03/25/1953 in Los Angeles, CA) who, in 1940, worked as a real estate broker. His mother was Elizabeth McCann (born 07/25/1903 in PA-d. 04/15/1987 in Los Angeles, CA), who managed the household. In 1910, Elizabeth was one of six chldren--five girls and a boy--had by Owen McCann (born c. 03/1857 in Ireland-d. 06/06/1929 in Los Angeles, CA) and Annie Heineman (born c. 05/1870 in PA-d. 12/12/1930 in Los Angeles, CA). (Annie Heineman actually had eight children in total, but two died before 1900, according to that year's census.) Elizabeth was born in PA, but her family had relocated to Los Angeles by 1910, residing at 1303 Gramercy Place, at the time a well-to-do neighborhood. Her parents wed c. 1887. Owen lived on his "own income" as per the 1910 US Census. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: Los Angeles Assembly District 72, Los Angeles, California; Roll: T624_82; Page: 1b; Enumeration District: 0208; FHL microfilm: 1374095, accessed 10/09/2024.)

Both of Joseph's parents had finished college, as per the 1940 US Census, a rarity for the time. His mother had completed five years in college.

Louis had a brother three years older, Domingo Francis Xavier Amestoy (born 07/31/1928 in Los Angeles, CA-d. 02/17/1988 in Ventura County, CA) and another brother Owen John Amestoy (born 03/23/1930 in Los Angeles, CA-d. 03/10/1940 in Los Angeles, CA), who died in childhood.
