Following the war, in 1950, Barnhart and his family resided at 99 Laumer Avenue in San Jose, CA. The household included his wife June and their son Frederick. Barnhart passed away on 03/03/1977 in Santa Clara County, CA, and was buried at the Los Gatos Memorial Park, San Jose, CA.

Fred Barnhart, Sr., held multiple jobs during his lifetime, according to various US censuses. In 1910, he worked as Hartington, NE's postmaster. Ten years later, he worked as a title abstractor for a real estate office. By 1930, Fred, Sr., worked as an office manager for a Saint Louis, MO, insurance company.

Joseph had a brother Frederich William Barnhart, Jr., (1905-1934) and two sisters, Gladys M. Barnhart (born 04/08/1896 in NE-d. 02/25/1958) and Ruth M. Barnhart Moore (born 1907 in NE-d. 1999 in GA).

At age 26, Joseph Barnhart was described on his World War II draft registration card as Caucasian with a ruddy complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He stood 6-feet tall and weight about 175 pounds.
