Relocation

Patigian was born in Van, Turkey, in the eastern portion of the country. Van had a large population of people of Armenian descent before the Armenian Genocide in Van Province in 1914-1915.

According to a biographical card in the California State Library, Patigian had spent 32 years in the state by 1923. He came to the US from Le Havre, France in 01/1891. He resided first with his family in Fresno, CA, where a large number of Armenian immigrants settled after 1881. This number in Fresno County swelled after the Ottomans' Armenian Genocide of 1914-1915.

The sculptor resided in Paris, France during 1906 and 1907. Upon returning from Paris, he settled permanently in San Francisco in 1908. The artist traveled in Europe between 10/1912 and 03/1913. Patigian died of myocardial failure at Stanford University Hospitals in San Francisco on 10/19/1950, about five weeks after the death of his wife, Blanche on 09/10/1950.

His father was Avedis Patigian (born 1845 in Armenia-d. 01/02/1916 in Fresno County, CA), his mother Marine Hovespian (born 1857 in Armenia-d. 06/05/1905 in Fresno County, CA).

He had the following siblings: Horen Patigian (born 1873 in Armenia-d. 08/10/1902 in Fresno County, CA), Lois Patigian Fair (born 06/13/1881 in Armenia-d. 01/02/1952 in Stanislaus County, CA), Lily Patigian (born 1883 in Armenia-d. 06/04/1922 in Ahwahnee, CA), Rose Patigian (born 1885 in Armenia-d. 11/20/1905 in Fresno County, CA) and Arthur Schely Patigian (born 09/19/1888 in CA-d. 04/02/1993 in Alameda County, CA).

Horen Patigian was also an artist who died at about age 29.

He wed Blanche Holliday Hollister (born 01/12/1876 in Courtland, CA-d. 09/10/1950 in San Francisco, CA) in 1908.
