His parents were Edward R. Ding (born 07/26/1892 in Portland, OR) and Cheong Kwan Chi (born 09/23/1904 in Canton, China). His mother changed her name to "Vivian Ding" when she came to live in the US permanently. She married Edward R. Ding on 03/22/1924 in Hong Kong. According to her UW naturalization paperwork of 08/20/1945, Vivian came to the US from Hong Kong on 05/12/1931 aboard the SS Haian Maru, arriving in Seattle, WA. She left the US to go back to China in 11/1933 aboard the Emperor of Japan and came back to Seattle in 02/1935 aboard the SS President Grant. Vivian became a US citizen on 01/18/1945 in the US District Court, Portland, OR. On 08/20/1945, Vivian Ding lived at 2303 SE Ladd Avenue in Portland, OR.
