Relocation
The architect John Augustin Remer was born in New York, NY. On 06/04/1866, according to records of the Emigrant Savings Bank, Remer lived at 152 Eldridge Street in New York, when he worked as a clerk. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information: New York, U.S., Emigrant Savings Bank Records, 1850-1883 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005, accessed 11/21/2020.) He remained at this address in 1868. (See New York, New York, City Directory, 1868, p. 856.)
The 1870 US Census indicated that Remer lived in a rooming house run by his mother-in-law, Eliza Ware, on Lexington Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets. One member of the Ware household was James E. Ware (born c. 1845 in New York, NY), also an architect. (See Ancestry.com Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: New York Ward 21 District 16 (2nd Enum), New York, New York; Roll: M593_1050; Page: 512A; Family History Library Film: 552549, accesse 11/21/2020.) In 1871, the year of Elise's birth, Remer and his wife's first child, they lived at 321 Lexington Avenue in New York, NY. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation New York City Department of Records & Information Services; New York City, New York; New York City Birth Certificates; Borough: Manhattan; Year: 1871, accessed 11/21/2020.) Three years later, Remer and his young family dwelled at 373 Herkimer Street in Brooklyn. (See Brooklyn, New York, City Directory, 1874, p. 703.)
Remer probably relocated to San Francisco, CA, because of his commission for the Baldwin Hotel and Academy of Music commission in 1875 or 1876. He resided there for several years before moving back to Brooklyn, NY, by 1883, where his son Richard was born.
Remer resided at 1721 Buchanan Street in San Francisco, CA, in 1880. He lived in this house with his wife, Elinor, and children Elise, John, Helen, Georgie, and Grace. The household included two servants, Mary Daly (born 1862 in Ireland) and Sarah Greeley (born 1860 in Ireland). (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011, accessed 11/21/2020.)
