His mother was Adena Wilhelmina Fuhrer (born 02/04/1902-d. 07/11/1994 in Portland, OR), his father, Lawrence Wilfred Shiels, Sr., (born 03/09/1901 in Chicago, IL-d. 04/22/1976 in Portland, OR). In 1950, Lawrence Shiels was a partner and manager in an investment securities firm in Portland.
Lawrence's parents both immigrated to OR from Norway, while Adena's both came from Switzerland.
The 1940 US Census indicate that Lawrence, Sr., had completed four years of college. Roger's mother had completed high school.
Roger had an elder brother, Lawrence Wilfred Shiels, Jr., (born 11/10/1929 in Portland, OR-d. 03/10/2008 in OR). In 1956, when Lawrence. Jr., married Mary Patricia Ryan (born 08/09/1924 in Newton, Lancashire, England). he worked as a salesman. Mary was a school teacher.
