His father, Harry Bernard Eckert (born 12/26/1879 in Auburn, NY-1d. 03/11/1962 in Monterey County, CA) completed high school and worked as a road contractor (c. 1930) and for the Seatle Gas Company (c. 1940).

His mother was Lena C. Campbell, (born 04/29/1876 in NY-d. 02/04/1977 in Monterey County ,CA) who managed the household. She had attended two years of college, as per the 1940 US Census. Growing up, Lena had lived in Elmira, NY. In 1950, Harry and Lena resided with their daughter Margaret in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Hamilton and his two sisters had had at least two years of college coursework by 1940. Margaret worked as a hospital laboratory technician in 1950 in Monterey County, CA.
