Sabato was born in the town of Fuscaldo in the Province of Cosenza, Italy. Cosenza makes up part of the Calabria section of southern Italy. He was born in 1888 into a large family. His family name was slightly altered in 1939 to add his maternal name "Ceraldi" to his last name. His family in Fuscaldo was locally influential. Eugenio Lelio Remigio Maria Sabato, his father, served as the secretary of its municipal government from 1880 until 1895 and his mother Raffaella Costanza Ceraldi came from a prominent and educated family.
