Relocation

William G. Hind was Canadian by birth, but migrated to the US by about 1883, according to the 1910 US Census, and 1884 as per the 1900 US Census. The 1920 US Census indicated that he came to the US in 1884 and was naturalized in 1889. Hind likely lived in the American South, in AL, c. 1890 through 1892, before moving to CA during or before 1896.

In 1900, Hind and his family resided in Alisal (aka "East Salinas"), Monterey County, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Alisal, Monterey, California; Roll: 94; Page: 5; Enumeration District: 0002, accessed 06/08/2023.)

Voter rolls indicated that Hind also lived in San Francisco, CA, in 1900. At this date, he was registered as living at 1207 Market Street. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1900, accessed 06/08/2023.) He moved to Apartment B on the second floor of 749 Baker Street in San Francisco by 1902. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1902, accessed 06/08/2023.)

Another voter list showed Hind living in Berkeley, CA, in 1908. He dwelled at 2241 Blake Street. After the 1906 Earthquake, many San Franciscans moved to the East Bay cities of Berkeley and Oakland, while rebuilding took place. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1908, accessed 06/08/2023.)

As noted in the 1910 US Census, the Hinds lived at 708 Broderick Street in San Francisco, CA. The household included William and his wife Van Delia, their children Alfred, Harry, and Nell, and William's divorced sister-in-law, Annie Dillingham (born c. 1855 in TN). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Francisco Assembly District 38, San Francisco, California; Roll: T624_99; Page: 8a; Enumeration District: 0199; FHL microfilm: 1374112, accessed 06/08/2023.)

By 1915, William's wife Vandelia lived in Oakland, CA, with their children Arthur, Harry and Nell Hind at 2302 Dwight Way. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland, California, City Directory, 1915, p. 966.) William was not listed in this entry.

In 1920, Hind and his wife lived at 655 66th Street in Oakland in a rented house. They lived here with their son-in-law Oliver D. Morton (born c. 1895 in CA), their daughter Nell, their grandson Curtis Morton (born c. 1917 in CA) and William's widowed sister-in-law Annie D. Walker (born c. 1856 in TN). Olver worked as a machinist in 1920. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Oakland, Alameda, California; Roll: T625_89; Page: 19B; Enumeration District: 67, accessed 06/08/2023.)

In 1930, William and Vandelia Hind lived in Phoenix, AZ, with their son Arthur, who at that time managed a cattle company. William was listed in the 1930 US Census as "retired." Nine people lived in a rented residence at 339 West Portland Street, including Alfred E. Hind; his wife E. Lucille (born c. 1892 in OH); their daughter Myrtle (born c. 1916 in CA), William and Vandelia Hind; Nell M. Morton, Alfred's widowed sister; Curtis and Doris (born c. 1920 in CA), Arthur's nephew and niece, respectively; and Minnie E. Gott (born c. 1865 in OH), Arthur's mother-in-law. Arthur paid a significant $95 per month in rent, about double what immediate neighbors were paying. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 0019; FHL microfilm: 2339793, accessed 06/08/2023.)

Parents

His father was Thomas Hind, his mother Emily Stephens.

Spouse

He wed Van Delia Winham (also written "Vandelia," born 01/08/1870 in TN-d. 04/09/1945 in Los Angeles, CA), c. 1887. Her mother's maiden name was Ursery.

Children

He and Van Delia had three children: Alfred E. Hind (born c. 11/1889 in AL), Harry Winham Hind (born 08/10/1891 in AL-d. 12/1964 in CA) and Nell M.V. Hind Morton (born c. 01/1896 in CA).

It may have been the case that Alfred Hind did not like his first name. He was known as "Frederick" Hind in the 1900 US Census, and changed his name to "Arthur" by about 1915. In that year, he was listed as living with the family in Oakland and working as an architect. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland, California, City Directory, 1915, p. 966.) "Arthur's" name also appeared in the 1930 US Census living with his parents. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 0019; FHL microfilm: 2339793, accessed 06/08/2023.)

In 1915, Harry was listed in the city directory as being a carpenter and Nell, a teacher. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland, California, City Directory, 1915, p. 966.)

Biographical Notes

Voter records of 1908 indicated that Hind was a registered Republican. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1908, accessed 06/08/2023.)
