He lived here a middle child with his five siblings, three sisters and a brother. The census indicated that his father had finished one year of high school, his mother completed the eighth grade.

At age 18, he lived at 633 North Kansas Street, Springfield, MO.

His father was Alva Stevangel Maples (born c. 1900 in MO-d/ 12/1967 in Seattle, WA), who lived and worked on Missouri farms for much of his life. Wayne's parents had moved to Seattle by 1953, and Alva worked as a janitor for the Boeing Aircraft Company, and lived at 9032 14th Avenue SW in West Seattle. Wayne's mother was Mary E. Teague (born 02/17/1904 in MO-d. 10/1992 in Seattle, WA). In addition to Wayne, Mary and Alva raised five other children: Maxine Maples Gregory (1922-2011), John Max Maples (born 02/18/1924 in MO), Elva Lee Maples Wettstead (1927-2004), Buford E. Maples (1929-2009) and Wanda Mae Maples Perrupato (born c. 1931 in MO).
