Personal

Relocation

Edward C. Kent was born in the Philadelphia suburb of Gwynedd, PA, now a part of Lower Gwynedd Township, PA. In 1870, the Kents lived on an agricultural estate. Thirteen people lived in the household, most of whom were Edward's older half-siblings and full sisters and brothers. Rodolphus Kent also employed three domestic servants and leased a room to a boarder. Domestic servants included Mary Smith (born c. 1840 in Ireland), Minnie Jones (born c. 1835 in PA), and a farm laborer, Jesse Hooker (born c. 1850 in PA). A watch maker, Thomas W. Clark (born c. 1815 in PA), boarded with the Kents. The Kents owned real estate worth about $25,000 in 1870, a significant sum, and possessed other savings worth about $3,000. At age 13, Edward remained on the Gwynedd family farm living with his two of half-siblings and two full siblings. The family remained prosperous enough to employ three servants: Mary Coroy (perhaps spelled "Corey," born c. 1846 in Ireland), Tress Kaley (born c. 1850 in Ireland) and Charles O'Neil (born c. 1862 in Ireland).

In 1930, Edward and Winifred Kent and their three sons had a house on Grand Avenue in Covina, CA. Ten years later, they continued to make their home at 328 South Grand Avenue in Covina. Parents

His father Rodolphus Kent, Sr. (born 07/04/1803 in Moorewtown, NJ-d. 08/22/1881 in Philadelphia, PA), owned a farm on which his family lived in Gwynedd, PA, between at least 1860 and 1870. In the latter year, the US Census listed his occupation as "insurance agent," although he also likely supervised the farm's production. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1860; Census Place: Gwynedd, Montgomery, Pennsylvania; Page: 104, accessed 07/26/2021 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: Gwynedd, Montgomery, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1377; Page: 392A, accessed 07/26/2021.)

Rodolphus married twice: His first wife was Sarah Clark Kent (born 1817-d. 10/28/1858). Sarah had at least nine children: Sarah Kent (born c. 1830 in PA), Mary T. Kent (born 08/14/1831 in PA-d. 03/30/1910 in Sackets Harbor, NY), Jacob Ford Kent (born 09/14/1835 in Philadelphia, PA-d. 12/22/1918 in Troy, NY), John B. Kent (born c. 1840 in PA), Jane D. Kent (born c. 1844 in PA), Elizabeth C. Kent (born c. 1846 in PA), Joseph Lyon Kent (born 1848 in PA-d. 1850 in PA), Ella C. Kent (born c. 1852 in PA), and Rodolphus Kent, Jr. (born c. 1856 in PA).

Jacob became a cadet at the West Point Military Academy and, subsequently, a Brigadier General in the US Army. Rodolphus Kent, Jr., graduated with a degree in chemistry from Lehigh University in 1874.

His second wife was Edward's mother, Elizabeth Lyon Clark Kent (born 1826-d. 06/15/1915 in Covina, CA). She had Robert Sayre Kent (born 09/24/1864 in PA), Edward C. Kent, Mary S. Kent (born c. 1867 in PA) and Jennie G. Kent (born c. 1867 in PA).

Robert Sayre Kent would become a consulting engineer, working in New York, NY.

He wed Winifred Dale (born 12/09/1876 in Marietta, OH-d. 06/19/1954 in Covina, CA) on 10/11/1906 in Los Angeles, CA. They likely married in the Garvanza neighborhood of Los Angeles.
