Relocation

Charles E. Du Bois was born in Rochester, NY, on 04/09/1903, one of two children of Gertrude L. Markle and Elwyn Copeland Du Bois. In 1900, Elwyn and Gertrude lived with his mother and his sister at 16 Rainier Street in Rochester, NY. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Rochester Ward 10, Monroe, New York; Page: 3; Enumeration District: 0069; FHL microfilm: 1241074, accessed 04/19/2021.) The year of Charles's birth, 1903, Elwyn was listed as boarding at 16 Rainier. (See Rochester, New York, City Directory, 1903, p. 229.)

Few records of Gertrude and Elwyn living in the same place exist after this time, suggesting that they separated c. 1905. The Rochester, New York, City Directory, 1905, (p. 240) indicated that Elwyn "remd. to Los Angeles, Cal." He appears to have been gone between 1905 and 1907, probably finding work in CA. One listing for him in the Rochester, New York, City Directory, 1908, (p. 265) indicated the Elwyn returned to work as a shipper, but lived in a boarding house at 253 Exchange Street. Gertrude and her two children likely relocated to live with relatives in neighboring Oswego County by this time.

By 1910, Charles lived on a farm owned by his step-grandfather Reverend Samuel Foster Emery (born 11/25/1859-d. 12/20/1949 in Mexico, NY) in Mexico, NY, in Oswego County. The farm was situated off a main road connecting Mexico and Lamb's Corners, NY. Charles continued to reside on this Mexico farm when the 1915 NY State Census was completed with Stephen Emery, his maternal grandmother, Eliza Markle Emery, his half-aunt Eliza Emery Smith (born 07/30/1892-d. 09/09/1973 in Mexico, NY) and her husband Clarence E. Smith (born c. 1895). Charles's mother Gertrude L. Du Bois and his sister, Gertrude Lillian Du Bois also lived on the Emery Farm in 1915. In 1918, Elwyn worked for the S. P. Oil Mining Company in Fresno, CA, as a well puller in 1918. Charles and his sister Gertrude had moved to Glendale, CA, by at least 1920, when he lived with his aunt Lillian Du Bois Beamon (born c. 1880 in NY), her husband Alexander M. Beamon (born c. 1882 in IA), and their son, Charles (born c. 1911 in CA). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Glendale, Los Angeles, California; Roll: T625_102; Page: 4B; Enumeration District: 26, accessed 04/20/2021.)

He wed Marjory Gunyon in 1924. He and his wife had a residence at 2909 West 59th Street in Los Angeles in 1937. (See Los Angeles A-L, California, City Directory, 1937, p. 588.) This number may have been recorded incorrectly, as on 02/15/1942, Du Bois and his wife dwelled at 2409 West 59th Street, Los Angeles. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in St. Louis, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri; WWII Draft Registration Cards for California, 10/16/1940-03/31/1947; Record Group: Records of the Selective Service System, 147; Box: 488, accessed 04/19/2021.)

The Du Bois Family had moved to 4905 Rupert Avenue, Los Angeles, by 1954. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1900-1968, accessed 04/19/2021.)

Richard may have died early in life, c. 1886, or he may have fled his marriage and moved to CA. A 11/15/1893 naturalization form for a Richard Markle, born in Canada, was filed in the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles. His father was listed in 1899 as a piano maker, and a year later as a shipping clerk. Later in his life, he worked in Fresno, CA, oilfields.
