Born in Ellensburg, WA, Mark R. Kolmodin attended Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA, graduating in 1975. He resided at 535 SE Dexter Street and 935 SW Mies Street while living in Pullman. The architect moved to Seattle, and lived there between 1977 and 1981. He returned to Pullman in 1981 to work as a Visiting Professor at WSU, teaching for four years. He returned to Seattle by 1984, and has remained a practicing architect in this city since that time.
