He enlisted back in his hometown of Freehold, NJ, where he stayed between 04/27/1898 until 05/02/1898. The Army sent him to Camp Voorhees at Sea Girt, NJ, where he remained between 05/02/1898 until 05/25/1898. He then was assigned to Pompton Lake, NJ, between 05/26/1898 through 11/11/1898. Finally, he spent his last period in the military at Camp Haskell, in Athens, GA, from 11/13/1898 until 02/11/1899. He attained the rank of corporal on 08/01/1898.

The 1940 US Census continued to list Raiguel as an architect working in independent practice. He collaborated with the California State Parks Commission on the restoration of an historic adobe in Monterey, CA, during the 1930s.

By 1898, he resided in Malvern, PA, when he entered the US Army. He spent time in the military between 04/1898 until 02/1899, where he served at bases in NJ and GA.

At age 35 in 1910, Raiguel resided at 641 O’Farrell Street in San Francisco, CA. Raiguel and his wife, Flora, lived in an apartment building at 1152 Sacramento Street in San Francisco, CA, in 1912-early 1914. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1914, p. 1539.) Raiguel worked as a manager for Gladding, McBean and Company, in Los Angeles, CA, beginning in 1921. He and Flora resided at 1500 West 9th Street in Los Angeles, between 1921 and 1926. Raiguel resided back in Southern CA in 1924 and lived here until about 1926, before relocating to Monterey County. In 1928, he and Flora Raiguel lived at 203 Cedar Street in Pacific Grove, CA. (See R.L. Polk and Company’s Monterey County Directory, 1928, p. 367.) The 1930 US Census, reported that William and Flora lived in Pebble Beach, CA, where they owned a residence. It had a value estimated at $12,000 in that year. Voter’s records for Monterey County, c. 1928, indicated that Flora I. Raiguel lived in Pacific Grove, CA, while William lived in Del Monte. It appears that he divorced Flora in the early 1930s.

He wed Bema Barton Lyon (born 04/15/1893 in La Grange, IL-d. 05/16/1941 in Monterey, CA) on 08/12/1933 in Monterey, CA. Bema's father, Joseph Lyon, (born c. 0/1858 in NY), had been, in 1900, a chocolate manufacturer in Lyon, IL. This was her second marriage. She had wed Edward N. Haag, Jr., in Chicago, IL, on 04/25/1916. She returned alone on a cruise from Oslo, Norway, to Los Angeles beginning on 04/06/1932, still using the name Bema Haag. The 1940 US Census indicated that Bema Lyon had completed two years of college.

Biographical Notes

Raiguel applied for a US passport in 1905 in Philadelphia, PA, in order to travel in Europe for 6 months. As noted by the University of Californa, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design Archives, "Raiguel traveled extensively in western Europe, the United States, and Canada in 1905 and again in 1911." It appears that he also made a third extensive trip in the US, Canada and Europe, on which he produced three travel diatries held by the CED Architects. Its web site continued: "The William Otis Raiguel collection includes correspondence, contractual agreements, and travel diaries. The correspondence, dated from 1909-1920, is between Raiguel and John Galen Howard and documents some of their financial arrangements. Three travel diaries completed on his trip to England, France, and Italy include sketches of architectural plans, buildings, and architectural details. The diary from his later trip around the United States, Canada, and Europe contains small photographs, itineraries, and a few articles and brochures." His US passport application of 1905 indicated that he was Caucasian with a fair complexion, with a “high, sloping forehead,” blue or gray eyes, “pointed” nose, wide mouth, square chin, light hair, and oval face. According to voting records of 1910, 1912, 1922, and 1926, Raiguel was a registered Republican.
