Sylliaasen was born in Ringsaker kommune, Hedmark fylke, Norway, on 11/26/1860. Ringsaker is a town 40 km. south of Lillehammer, on Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake. The family took the name of its census district of residence, Sylliaasen, Norway. This district encompassed the Ringsaker parish, Ringsaker local parish, Veldre local parish, Brøttum local parish, and Ås chapel parish.
