In 1911, John made his home at 2618 Bush Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1911, p. 879.)

He lived at 2664 Bush Street in 1919. He passed away in this residence. The Architect and Engineer published a short notice of his death in 1920: "Mr. Emile John, 63 years old, pioneer San Francisco architect, and at one time prominently identified with the building industry died December 27th at the family home, 2664 Bush street, after an illness of thirteen years."
