He immigrated to the United States and then moved west around the turn of the century. He began working for Huntington in 1904. Hertrich would remain with Huntington until his employer’s death in 1927 and was superintendent of grounds and buildings until his retirement in 1948. Hertrich continued on in an advisory capacity until his own death in 1966." Born in Inzlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, William Hertrich immigrated to the US in 1900 according to the 1910 US Census. The 1930 US Census.listed his date of entry into the US as 1901. Hertrich's US naturalization paperwork indicated that he left from Bremen, Germany, on 05/04/1901 probably aboard the Norddeutscher Lloyd ship the S.S. Kaiserin Maria Theresia, that arrived in New York around a week later.

Hertrich applied for naturalization to become a US citizen on 05/28/1903 in the Superior Court of Orange County at Santa Ana, CA. When he applied for citizenship he resided in San Gabriel, CA, and said he had lived in the state since 05/1901.
