The San Francisco, California, City Directory,1868 indicated that George H. Sanders lived at 1213 Bush Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1868, p. 486.)

In 1870, George Sanders lived with his sister, Henrietta, in San Francisco. Ten years later, the 1880 US Census indicated that he lived with another sister, Julianna, on Hyde Street in the same city. They had a Welsh servant, Annie Dipple (born c. 1834 in Wales), living with them. According to the Great [Voting] Register of San Francisco County of 1890, George H. Sanders was 34 in that year and was born in Canada; he lived at 923 Pine Street in San Francisco. He continued to reside at this address in 1898.

In 1910, he and Emma Sanders lived in an apartment building at 1621 Polk Street just west of Nob Hill. He lived with his step-daughter, Mabel Emma Burgess Additon Porter (1873-1949), at 2822 Piedmont Avenue in Berkeley, CA, in 1920. Mable had married A. Sydney Additon, and had been widowed at an early age. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1916, p. 937.)

Parents

His father was John Arnold Sanders (born 1781 in Bath, Somerset, UK-died 09/1860 in Bath, Somerset, UK), a noted painter, and his mother, Fanny Hippisley (1798-1862). His paternal grandfather was John Sanders (1750-1825) and grandmother Rebecca Arnold (1754-1818). John A. Sanders and Fanny Hippisley had 10 children together: Clara (d. 1924), Fanny, George, Juliana Sarah, Meta May, Henry John (1817-1882), Annabella (b. 1820), Emily Rebecca (b. 1824), Caroline Seymour (b. 1825), Theodocia (b. 1828). One of his sisters had a son, George Adrian Applegarth (1875-1972), who became a noted architect in San Francisco, CA.

Spouse

George H. Sanders married Euphemia Armstrong (1844-1868) in 05/1868 in San Francisco, CA; Euphemia died about two months later on 07/04/1868 in a ferryboat accident. Euphemia was the sister of John Wright's wife.

He married Emma Sanders (born c. 1850 in England) about 1908. She was about 11 years younger than he. Emma had had two children during a previous marriage according to the US Census of 1910. This census indicated that Emma came to the US in 1872.

Biographical Notes

The San Francisco Voter's Register of 1898, indicated that Sanders, at age 60, stood 5-feet, 6-and-1/2-inches tall, with blue eyes and gray hair. He had a scar over his eyes. This document indicated he had been naturalized in the Fourth District Court of San Francisco on 04/03/1870. The US Census of 1920 noted that he had come to the US in 1866 and had been naturalized in 1878. The 1910 US Census also stated that he had entered the US in 1866.
