John Davis Hatch enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Company, Coast Artillery, on 08/02/1917. He served in the US Army during World War I as a 1st Lieutenant. This could have been because he took a break from work after the war, or that he had been wounded and was recuperating. The US Census listed Gethel as the "head" of the family at this time, suggesting that John had been injured in the war.

His father was the architect John Davis Hatch III (born c. 1826), born in England, who became a US citizen on 07/28/1859. He lived in Yonkers, NY, at the time. One of the elder John Davis Hatch's most prominent works was the Second Empire Athenaeum at St. Johnsbury, VT (1868-1871).
