Robert Ingersoll Aitken sculpted the Victory Monument of Admiral Dewey in Union Square, San Francisco. Aitken was an Instructor at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in San Francisco. On a visit to San Francisco, President William McKinley helped to break ground for the Victory Monument in May 1901. On 09/07/1901, McKinley was shot, dying a week later. Aitken would sculpt a monument in San Francisco to the assasinated McKinley.
