In 1886, Mix was listed as both an architect and building contractor in the Independent Publishing Company's New Directory of the City of Santa Barbara, Cal., 1886, pp. 22 and 24. Architectural registration and accreditation did not begin in CA until 1901, so anyone could title themselves an architect in 1886. Mix was one of three men listed as architects in the city directory of 1886, the others being Peter J. Barber (1830-1905) and Thomas Nixon.
