Berthon, E., Architect and Draughtsman
Résumé
Principal, E. Berthon, Architect, Los Angeles, CA, 1875. In 1875, his office was on Main Street near the Pico House Hotel. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1875, p. 15.) According to the Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1875, (p. 102), Berthon was one of four architects operating in Los Angeles in 1875. The others were W.J. Graham, Ezra F. Kysor, and E.J. Weston.
It appears that Berthon remained in Los Angeles for only a brief time around the mid-1870s. The San Francisco Directory, 1863, (p. 67) listed an "E. Berthon," living on northeast corner of Pine and Dupont Streets. The 1865 directory indicated that E. Berthon was a liquor dealer at 523 Union Street. (See San Francisco Directory, 1865, p. 509.) Tax records for 1865 and 1866 also listed a liquor dealer "E. Berthon" as residing in San Francisco at 523 Union Street. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives and Records Administration; Washington, D.C.; Internal Revenue Assessment Lists for California, 1862-1866; Series: M756; Roll: 4; Description: District 1; Special Lists; 1865; Record Group: 58, Records of the Internal Revenue Service, 1791 - 2006, accessed 01/27/2025 and Source Citation The National Archives and Records Administration; Washington, D.C.; Internal Revenue Assessment Lists for California, 1862-1866; Series: M756; Roll: 14; Description: District 1; Special Lists; 1866; Record Group: 58, Records of the Internal Revenue Service, 1791 - 2006, accessed 01/27/2025.)
It is possible that E. Berthon was an Englishman whose name appeared in ship's manifests in Australia between 1860 and 1876. An "E.Berthon" sailed between Sydney and Melbourne beginning on 01/16/1876 aboard the ship City of Adelaide.
