Personal

Relocation

Born in Ottumwa, IA in 1852, John Bills Stannard worked for much of his adult life in the booming city of San Diego, CA. Of his early life, the City of San Diego Historic Resources Board's Biographies of Established Masters entry on Stannard said: "After moving to Ohio and Kansas, Stannard moved his family to San Diego. He married his wife, Mary C. Smith, while in Ohio. While in Cowley County, Kansas, the family added a son and two daughters to the family." (See Jennifer Feeley, Tricia Olsen, Ricki Siegel, and Ginger Weatherford, "Biographies of Established Masters: John B. Stannard," [San Diego: City of San Diego, Historic Resources Board, 2011], p. 48.) At age 18, Stannard worked as a farmhand for the family of Jesse (born c. 1823 in OH) and Elisabeth Jenkins (born c. 1830 in OH) near Rushcreek in Logan County, OH. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: Rush Creek, Logan, Ohio; Roll: M593_1234; Page: 244A; Family History Library Film: 552733, accessed 05/10/2018.)

According to the 1880 US Census, Stannard, his wife, and two children, Anna and Luke, lived in Belle Center, OH, where he worked as a carpenter. The census form erroneously indicated that he had been born in OH, like his wife and children. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: Belle Center, Logan, Ohio; Roll: 1041; Page: 210D; Enumeration District: 124, accessed 05/10/2018.) The Kansas State Census done in 1885, noted that Stannard, his wife and four children resided in Walnut, Cowley County, KS, where he continued to work as a carpenter. (Today, a town by the name of Walnut, KS, is in Crawford County.) Judging by the ages and birthplaces of his children, Stannard moved his family to KS in about 1884 or 1885. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Kansas State Historical Society; Topeka, Kansas; 1885 Kansas Territory Census; Roll: KS1885_31; Line: 20, accessed 05/10/2018.)

According to "Biographies of Established Masters: John B. Stannard," Stannard began to work in San Diego in the Spring of 1887. The San Diego Voter Registration Index of 1894 noted that Stannard resided in the 1st Ward, 2nd Precinct of the city. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library, California History Section; Great Registers, 1866-1898; Collection Number: 4 - 2A; CSL Roll Number: 40; FHL Roll Number: 977095, accessed 05/10/2018.)

According to the US Census of 1910, Stannard resided at 454 13th Avenue in San Diego, with his wife, Mary, and son, Harry. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Diego Ward 8, San Diego, California; Roll: T624_95; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 0162; FHL microfilm: 1374108, accessed 05/10/2018.)

By 1920, he lived alone in San Diego at 1000 Columbia Street, his wife having passed away during the previous decade. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: San Diego, San Diego, California; Roll: T625_131; Page: 14A; Enumeration District: 313, accessed 05/10/2018.)

Stannard resided at the Odd Fellows Home for the Aged in Saratoga, CA, from at least 1930-1942. He died in 1942 after he was struck by an automobile, and was laid to rest in the Saratoga, CA, International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery. (See (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Saratoga, Santa Clara, California; Page: 1B; Enumeration District: 0115, and Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1940; Census Place: Saratoga, Santa Clara, California; Roll: m-t0627-00341; Page: 2A; Enumeration District: 43-149, accessed 05/10/2018.)

Parents

His mother's maiden name was Vanhouten.

Spouse

He married Mary C. Stannard (born c. 1852 in OH) in OH. It is not clear if her surname was Smith or Koplin. A record for a Mary Koplin marrying John Stannard exists for Logan County, OH. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Ohio, County Marriage Records, 1774-1993 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2016, accessed 05/10/2018.) They married on 01/21/1867 according to this record, although this would have meant that they wed at age 15, which is possible. The 1870 US Census did not indicate if John Stannard, born in IA in 1852, was married, nor was Mary listed as living with the Jenkins Family in Rushcreek, OH.

Mary passed away between 1910 and 1920, presumably in CA.

Children

He and Mary had five children together. They included Anna C. (born c. 1873 in OH), Luke (born c. 1879 in OH), Eugene (born c. 1879 in OH), and Mandie (born c. 1883 in OH) and Harold Rhodes Stannard (born c. 1896 in CA-d. 1948).

Biographical Notes

According to San Diego voter registration records of 1894, Stannard stood 5-feet, 11 and 1/2-inches tall, had blue eyes and gray hair.
