Born in Bermondsey, London, England in 1880, Clist lived in Willesden, Middlesex, England, as per the 1891 English Census. He migrated to the US via Liverpool, England, in 03/1907, settling first in Seattle, WA. His son, Angus was born in Seattle about 1910. His second son, Jack, was born in OR in 1912. He was naturalized in US Circuit Court in Multnomah County on 11/16/1912.

He and Jessie Clist resided at 2343 33rd Avenue South in Seattle, WA, in 1921. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1921, p. 1248.) The Clists continued to live at this address according to the 1930 US Census. The house, as the census noted, had an approximate value of $12,000. At that time, the household included sons Angus, Jack, and Walter, Jr., Walter, Sr.'s brother-in-law Kenneth H. Jack (born c. 1902 in England) and a cousin, Agnes King (born c. 1913 in Canada).

He, his wife, and son, Walter, resided in an apartment at 328 8th Avenue in Spokane, WA, in 1940. At age 60, Clist worked as the manager of an apartment house, perhaps the one at 328 8th. Clist died in Anaheim, Orange County, CA, at the age of 72.

His father was Mark Clist (born c. 1853 in Uffculme, Devon, England). His mother was Eliza Southey (born c. 1851 in Culmstock, Devon, England). In 1891, Mark was a bricklayer.

Walter had three sisters, Annie (born c. 1878 in Bermondsey, London, England), Ada (born c. 1884 in Bermondsey, London, England), and Celia (born c. 1889 in Bermondsey, London, England).

He and Jessie had three sons, Angus S. Clist (born c. 1910 in WA), Jack M. Clist (born c. 1916 in OR) and Walter M. Clist, Jr., (1923-1963). Walter, Jr., worked as the manager of the Coronado Club in Houston, TX, at this death in 1963.

On US Passport documents of 1924, Clist indicated that he and his wife were to embark from Portland, OR aboard the Lochkatrine on 02/14/1924 bound for a one-month tour of England and France. This passport application listed Clist at age 43 as standing 5-feet, 8-and-1/2-inches tall, with a high forehead, straight nose, moustache, round chin, dark hair and brown eyes. His complexion was a dark, Caucasian one.
