Personal

Relocation

Born in the northeast England town of Sunderland, Patton emigrated from there on first news of the Gold Rush at Sutter's Mill in 1849. The San Francisco Call reported in its obituary on Patton: "When news of the gold discoveries in California reached the old country, he was among the first to start for the new El Dorado. He came around the Horn in the same vessel with Thomas Blythe, and the two were fast friends up to the time of the latter's death." (See "The Reaper claims a Pioneer Architect," San Francisco Call, vol. 85, no. 175, 05/24/1899, p. 10.) Thomas H. Blythe was a little-known, San Francisco, real estate millionaire who died intestate with a fortune valued at $6 million in 1883. The Scotsman's death became a source of popular fascination for San Franciscans, as potential heirs began to emerge from all corners of the earth during the 1880s. (See "Thomas H. Blythe," Los Angeles Herald, vol. 32, no. 73, 06/23/1889 p. 3.)

He lived at 1086 Union Street in San Francisco, CA, in 1869. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1869, p. 492.)

He passed away from throat cancer at his residence, 2253 Central Avenue in Alameda, CA, at the age of 78.

Spouse

He married his wife in San Francisco, CA.
