Born in Marshfield, WI, in the middle of the state, Olin spent his childhood in AK. He came to the University of Washington, Seattle, where he studied with the great Richard Haag (b. 1923). Following graduation, Olin landed jobs in landscape architecture firms in Seattle, New York, NY, and London, UK. He made a transition to academia in the mid-1970s, working at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, and at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. In addition to his teaching positions Olin has managed a worldwide landscape architecture practice based in Philadelphia.
