His father, Fred Oringdulph, Sr., (born c. 1908 in NE), worked as a manager for a lumber company in Portland, OR, in 1940. His mother, Helen Hunt, (born c. 1908 in MO), managed the household that included three sons, Fred Oringdulph, Jr., (born c. 1928 in CO), Robert, and David Oringdulph, (born c. 1938 in OR). According to the 1940s US Census, Helen had completed high school, while Fred, Sr., had finished two years of college. Oringdulph married Ernestine Gohrband, (born 11/07/1932 in Portland, OR-d. 08/31/2017 in Portland, OR), a school music teacher, on 06/21/1957 in Portland, OR. She graduated from the same high school as Robert, Grant High in Portland, in the same year, 1950. She attended the University of Idaho, where she received a B.A. in music. She then matriculated at the Universtiy of Texas at Austin, where she earned a Master's in Music Education by 1955. She taught music in TX for two years, before returning to her hometown in 1957.
