Charles P.H. Dose was born in Beckerwitz, Germany, and lived in that country until emigrating to the US where he arrived, according to a US Naturalization document, on 10/20/1865. Dose traveled to the US from Hamburg, Germany, to New York, NY, between 10/01/1865 and 10/25/1865, just after the end of the US Civil War. He arrived aboard the S.S. Borussia, a ship launched in 1855 and sunk in 1879. He lived from about 1865 until 1898 in Chicago, IL. Both of his children were born in IL. He relocated to the State of WA in 1898. Between 1906 and 1910, he resided at 508 Yesler Way, in the heart of Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood, in 1906. By 1910, C.P. had moved his business to 31st Avenue South, southeast corner of South Walker Street in what is now the Rainier Valley neighborhood. In 1912, the Seattle City Directory (p. 429) indicated that the residence was located at 2121 31st Avenue South in the midst of a tract developed by the Dose and his son.

Dose moved from the 31st Avenue South residence, now on the National Register of Historic Places, to 3007 Walker Street in Seattle, by at least 04/09/1920.

He died on 09/03/1926 in Seattle, WA.

Biographical Notes

Although his middle names were "Paul Henry," Dose only went by his middle initial, "P.," while in Seattle.

Dose was a Notary Public.

Dose was naturalized in Chicago, IL, in 1870, but all records burned in a fire and those naturalized there needed to reapply through the system. He stated in a new petition for naturalization in Seattle in 1920: "The Naturalization Records of Cook Co. Ill. were destroyed in the Chicago fire, and under the new registration laws I was unable to get a copy to prove my citizenship."
